I have relaxed hair and want it to grow longer. Does anyone have any helpful advice?

I am mostly African American, but I am also 1/3 Native american(Cherokee).

When I was younger I had really long, thick hair. About two inches past my waist. Then i got a perm to make my hair less thick, and more managable. Two years later my hair bacame really short, and now it is slightly past my shoulders. I need some helpful advice on how to grow it out again. Thanks!

I have struggled with hair length for years. When I had a perm (relaxer) my hair never grew past shoulder-length. You already know your hair was really long when it was natural, you need to go natural again to truly achieve the length you want. With a perm it's only going to get so long before it starts splitting apart because perms weaken your hair shaft. I have been going natural for the past year and half, and I have achieved growth like never before. Your hair does not have to be permed to be manageable. Do some research about maintaining natural hair. Start with this site: http://motowngirl.com/index.php

Okay...this is what you need to do (good luck)

1. STOP relaxing and/or coloring it. Chemicals are sooo bad for your hair (esp if you don't know how to keep it healthy)

2. CONDITION CONDITION CONDITION. When you wash your hair (be sure to repeat--if you have damaged hair) use a LOT of conditioner and leave it on for 5+ minutes. Rinse and then use a THICK restorative treatment (i like the one by Pantene Pro-V) Leave on for up to 15 minutes and rinse. THEN use a leave-in-conditioner (I like Parnevu for extra dry hair). if your hair is too weighed down, try the foam conditioner by Dove. It is good and isn't weighty.

3. Wash/condition often. Daily if you can. This will help trigger growth. Also...the actual movement of washing hair (the massaging of your scalp) triggers hair growth

4. Eat healthy!!! Eat your recommended amounts of fruits and veggies. make sure you get protein too. And if you're not already, talk to your doctor about getting on a good multivitamin. I"m sure s/he would recommend taking it with food for more efficient digestion.

5. Keep a good positive attitude. Stress will stunt hair growth

6. Wear your hair down when you can...clips, rubberbands etc. put stress on your hair

7. oil your scalp (I like to use carrot oil on people who are trying to grow their hair) you can get it at a local beauty supply store for under $4.

8., Stay away from heat...that means minimal blowdrying/straightening etc. unless absolutely; necessary. if/when you do use it, protect your hair w/ biosilk or oil sheen (something oil based).

GOOD lUCK!!!
