What can causes hair shedding?

I am 35 yr old african american woman who has always had very long and full head of hair naturally about 22-24 inch long right now. I am wondering what could be causing my hair to shed so much lately. My hair seems so much thinner that it used to be. I have had problems with iron deficieny in the past so I made a doctor's appointment to check this out. I made an appointment with the dermatologist as well to make sure I don't have any scalp troubles. Until I make these visits, can anyone provide insight?

You may already be aware of this. Braiding too tightly or weaving non human hair into the hair can cause this! Another option may be to see a licensed cosmetologist who specializes in natural hair.
